It was pretty much inevitable at this point: Chevrolet is expanding the Silverado HD lineup, which was already announced with a number of improvements for 2024, by adding a rugged and off-road-ready ZR2 model, taking a page from the Silverado 1500 and Colorado.
An even more capable Silverado HD ZR2 Bison, developed with off-road aftermarket manufacturer American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) and featuring unique components, is also part of the mix.

Offered exclusively in the 2500 Crew Cab configuration, these new trucks can be powered by a standard 6.6-litre gasoline V8 or optional 6.6-litre Duramax turbo-diesel V8. The former enables a higher payload (3,397 lbs), while the latter boasts superior towing capacity (up to 18,500 lbs).
Naturally, a massive, ZR2-style grille dominates the front fascia. The unique wheel arch mouldings feature integrated mud guards, the suspension is raised 38 mm (front and rear) and utilizes Multimatic’s excellent DSSV shocks along with specific control arms up front, and a larger steel transfer case skid plate and front aluminum skid plate provide extra protection on rough terrain.
Watch: Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 Makes Official Debut
The 18-inch wheels are wrapped in Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires in a size of 35 inches, so grip should not be a problem. Meanwhile, a new Off-Road Mode adjusts various vehicle calibrations, such as the anti-lock brakes, traction control and stability control, to optimize performance for off-road driving. It also alters throttle progression and transmission shifts, and the locking rear axle does not have a speed limitation.
As mentioned up top, the Silverado HD ZR2 Bison goes even further. Just to be clear, it’s the red truck on the pictures. Other than its unique badges and gloss black alloy wheels, this model stands out with distinctive stamped-steel cut bumpers allowing greater approach and departure angles (the front one incorporates a winch provision), as well as stamped steel underbody skid plates for the front of the vehicle, steering rack, exhaust and transfer case.

The cabin obviously builds on the upgrades made for 2024 while combining dark trim accents with the Jet Black and Graystone leather-appointed surfaces. Chevrolet made sure to select materials that are simple to wipe clean after a day in the dirt. Some practical features include an available 15-inch head-up display with an off-road inclinometer and HD Surround Vision.
The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD ZR2 and ZR2 Bison will enter production this summer at the Flint assembly plant in Michigan, ready to take on the Ford Super Duty Tremor in addition to the Ram 2500 Rebel and Power Wagon. Pricing will be announced closer to launch.
