Not since cars were a new technology have Americans seen so many new automakers appear announcing exotic new products. Many come and go. What separates the ones with staying power?
Experience. Fisker Inc. is the brainchild of an automotive designer who has penned successful cars for Aston Martin and BMW. The company is now listed and traded on the New York Stock Exchange (symbol: FSR) and has outsourced manufacturing to longtime automotive parts giant Magna International, so it doesn’t need to build from the ground up to get its cars to market.

Fisker has several products in the pipeline. But the one you’re likely to see on American roads first is the 2023 Fisker Ocean, a lovely midsize crossover with an estimated range of up to 350 miles and a starting price of $37,499.
The Ocean offers innovative features like an available solar roof (it doesn’t produce enough energy to recharge the battery for daily use, but Fisker says it “can produce up to 1,500 clean, emissions-free miles per year”) and a central touchscreen that rotates from portrait to landscape orientation.
In the long run, Fisker will offer the Ocean in three trim levels. But early buyers also have the option of a limited-edition fourth trim, the Ocean One. A special launch trim isn’t unusual these days, but Fisker doesn’t charge extra for it, giving early buyers a chance to own a limited edition for the same cost as the top-of-the-line trim.

2023 Fisker Ocean Sport (Starting at $37,499)
The entry-level Ocean uses a single electric motor attached to the front axle for a front-wheel-drive (FWD) layout like most midsize cars, making 275 horsepower. The Ocean Sport’s Touring Range battery, Fisker estimates, should have a driving range of about 250 miles (the EPA hasn’t gotten around to testing the Ocean’s range yet).
Two drive modes, Earth and Fun, let you choose between driving for maximum range or performance.
That 17.1-inch central touchscreen dominates the dashboard, while a BigSky panoramic fixed glass roof should make the cabin feel spacious. EcoFabric seats are made from recycled materials. Tray tables rise out of the center console, one for each front seat. We picture them holding laptops to get work done (while parked), but Fisker calls them “taco trays.”
Standard safety aids include automatic emergency braking that can detect cars, pedestrians, and cyclists; blind-spot monitoring; and lane-keeping assist.

Fisker says its PowerBank technology will allow the car to charge devices, other EVs, and even a home in the event of a blackout. That capability might not be available at launch but will be added later via an over-the-air update.
2023 Fisker Ocean Ultra (Starting at $49,999)
A step up to the Ocean Ultra gets you longer range — 340 miles — and a second motor on the rear axle for the added grip of all-wheel drive (AWD). Power jumps all the way to 540 horsepower, and you get an additional driving mode — Hyper — to take advantage of it.
A clutch lets drivers disengage that rear motor and use just the front one for longer range. An added heat pump should make the battery more efficient in cold weather.
The Ultra also gets Fisker’s Smart Traction torque vectoring system, which varies the speed of each wheel separately to point the Ocean into each turn while minimizing body roll. Fisker says it makes the SUV “handle like a sports car,” but we haven’t had the chance to test it ourselves yet.
The fixed glass roof of the Sport is replaced with an OpenSky model — the entire roof is glass, but the front half can open like a traditional sunroof.
With it comes California Mode, which opens the roof and lowers all the windows, including the rear tailgate class, for something close to a convertible experience.

EcoFabric is still standard, but Ultra models can opt for FeelTek vegan leather at this level.
2023 Fisker Ocean Extreme (Starting at $68,999)
The top of the Ocean line gets an additional 10 miles of range and 10 more horsepower for totals of 350 miles and 550 horses. The additional power is accessible for short bursts in Boost Mode. Fisker says the Ocean Extreme can get from a standstill to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds with the help of Boost Mode.
Drivers can still disengage the rear motor for a FWD experience to extend the range.
A Traffic Jam Assist function keeps a set distance from the vehicle ahead in traffic, accelerating and braking as needed to maintain safe space all around. It works up to 40 mph. Fisker says it will add a lane change assist function later in 2023.

The Ocean Extreme gets the unique SolarSky roof, which adds solar panels to trickle additional charge into the batteries. They’re not efficient enough to let the Ocean fully charge itself while parked. But the company says they’ll supply an additional 1,500 miles worth of range each year in most climates and up to 2,000 if you live in a particularly sunny clime.
Remarkably, it opens like a sunroof using the same two-panel arrangement as the OpenSky roof. So, California Mode works even on the solar-roofed Ocean Extreme.
The Extreme ships with the FiskerPulse immersive audio system. It uses 16 speakers in six channels for surround sound. Uniquely, the speakers are all hidden in the upholstery to maintain a clean, minimalist look inside.
Speaking of upholstery, the Ocean Extreme gets standard FeelTek seats or optional Alcantara faux suede.
Fisker Ocean One (Starting at $68,999)
Fisker will sell 5,000 Ocean One launch editions. They carry identical equipment to the Extreme, along with a few unique touches to set them apart.
Twenty-two-inch wheels, optional on other trims, come as standard equipment. Buyers can choose from two designs and either black or silver colors.

The One gets a unique interior color scheme Fisker calls MaliBlu. It combines Indigo EcoSuede upholstery with teal accents on the seats with black door panels, carpet, and platinum accent trim. Unique badges identify the Ocean One.
A startup screen will identify the vehicle’s sequence number out of the limited run of 5,000.
